IRELAND

Derek McAleese

Career:
IRELAND caps: 1 (v France 1992)
Member of Irish Tour Squad (New Zealand 1993)
ULSTER caps: 25 (1990-1993)
CLASSIC LIONS (1998/99/00/01/02/03)
Profile:
Derek started his rugby career at Limavady Grammar School where he played for the 1st XV in fifth year. He later studied at the local technical college and continued his rugby with Limavady Rugby Club, where he played in the 1st XV from 1980-86. His talent was quick to attract the attention of the big clubs and in 1986 he joined Ballymena Rugby Club. Derek went straight into the 1st XV where he remained for 13 uninterupted years playing either outhalf or fullback. It was whilst at Ballymena that Derek won his Ulster caps and won his Irish cap in the Five Nations defeat to France in Paris. Although Derek kicked all Irelands points and didn't miss a kick at goal, he was surprisingly not selected again.
He returned home in 1999 to play for Limavady and helped them gain promotion to Qualifying League One, although he stills enjoys anual Autumn holidays to Bermuda to represent the Classic British Lions.
He currently runs DMC Properties & Mortgages in Limavady.
